Affordable Concepts, Inc. (ACI) recently celebrated the designation of Certified Healthcare Constructor (CHC) for Arlye Scott Weisheim, Executive Vice President and Nelson Cumana, Vice President. The CHC is a national credential issued by the American Hospital Association (AHA) Certification Center that distinguishes an individual as being among the elite in the critical field of healthcare construction.
To earn the CHC, an individual must satisfy eligibility requirements that incorporate a blend of professional experience and education, agree to adhere to the AHA Professional Standards of Conduct, and pass the CHC Certification Examination. The examination assesses the knowledge required of a competent healthcare construction manager in the areas of industry fundamentals, processes, safety, and financial stewardship. The CHC Program supports the community of healthcare construction professionals and certificants demonstrate their continued development to the profession by maintaining the certification through participation in professional development activities.
Affordable Concepts, Inc. (ACI) recently completed the Brown Hand Clinic & Surgery Center, a 15,998 sq. ft. tenant improvement project in Siena Pavilion II. Owned by Brown Hand Center, Inc. and designed by HMC Architects, the design-build project takes up the entire second floor of the three-story office building and is located at 2865 Siena Heights Drive in Henderson, Nevada.
This build-out necessitated the addition of a new stairway in the center of the building to comply with all exiting requirements. The surgery center occupies approximately 10,000 sf. ft. of the second floor and includes two Class “C” Surgery Rooms and six Pre-Op and Post Anesthesia Care Unit spaces. A new emergency power generator was provided for the Surgery Center.
ACI’s original budget was based on a one sheet floor plan provided by the owner. Once all documents were completed and the Building Department, Fire Department & State Licensing issues were addressed, the final cost came in just 2% over the original budget.

Affordable Concepts earns Safe Site award for hospital project
Challenging site conditions notwithstanding, Affordable Concepts' expansion of the surgery department at Valley Hospital has "gone extremely well for us, especially our safety procedures," said company Superintendent Pat Crosby.
"We assembled a very competent team of subcontractors for this project that all share in our commitment to safety," Crosby said. "Our ultimate goal is to make sure that everyone that steps onto this project on a daily basis gets back home safely to their families."

Affordable Concepts began the negotiated-contract expansion project in early 2008 and anticipates completing the job in early 2010.
The contractor is building a new 58,000-square-foot structure that will house 11 operating suites. When complete the hospital's surgery facility will move into the new building while Affordable Concepts remodels the existing building.
"With 30,000 square feet of this project being built as an addition immediately adjacent to the existing operating rooms, this has been a difficult project from the onset," said "Nelson Cumana, Affordable Concepts' project manager on the site. "I am extremely proud of our team's safety record on this job. Thanks to Pat Crosby and Labor Foreman Felix Duran, the facility was able to continue its normal operating procedures during the entire course of construction, and no one was ever put in harm's way."
With a significant portion of the project nestled against a standing building, Affordable Concepts was required to excavate a 30-foot basement next to the foundation.
"On top of that monumental task, we had to contend with groundwater and caliche," Crosby said. "This project required extensive planning and cooperation from all our subs in order to avoid any injuries or delays. Our ability to use a technique called "soil nailing" was instrumental in assuring us that despite all the obstacles put before us, we were able to perform the required scope of work with no safety incidents and in a timely manner.
Soil Nailing is a way of constructing retaining walls from the top down, using steel tendons drilled and grouted into the soil to create a composite mass similar to a gravity wall.
